Seven advantages of using organic cotton for crib sheets

Becoming a parent is a beautiful experience yet life-changing. In most cases, we develop an innate desire to care for and nurture our little humans

Newborns typically sleep for 16 to 17 hours a day! They sleep two to four hours at a time because they need to wake up to feed and for a diaper change. Although every baby is different and their sleep patterns may vary, the bottomline - sleep is a major and vital part of their day/night. That’s why organic crib sheets can be the best investment for your sweet baby. You won’t regret it!

Here are seven reasons why you’d want to use an organic crib sheet for your baby today!

Safety:

Organic crib sheets are made using natural materials free from harmful chemicals and toxins. Babies’ skin is like a sponge, they absorb everything which enters their internal organs, that’s why opting for a Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) certified crib sheet may be the safest option for your baby.

Harmful chemicals that you want to be aware of:

  • Formaldehyde: Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen that can be found in some crib sheets. It is commonly used as a preservative and can cause skin irritation, respiratory problems, and other health issues.

  • VOCs: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be found in some crib sheets and can cause headaches, dizziness, and other health problems. Some common VOCs found in crib sheets include benzene, toluene, and xylene.

  • Flame retardants: Flame retardant chemicals are often used in crib sheets to meet flammability standards. However, many of these chemicals are toxic and linked to health problems such as cancer, reproductive issues, and developmental delays.

  • Pesticides: Non-organic cotton is often treated with pesticides and other chemicals, which can remain in the fabric and potentially harm infants who come into contact with it.

Again, It is important to look for crib sheets that are made from natural and organic materials and have been certified by organizations such as Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) to ensure that harmful chemicals have not been used in the manufacturing process.

Health:

The use of organic materials in the production of crib sheets ensures that there are no synthetic materials that may cause allergic reactions, skin irritation, or respiratory problems in infants.

What are synthetic materials?

Some that are found in crib sheets are:

  • Polyester: Polyester is a synthetic material that is commonly used in bedding products, including crib sheets. It is durable, lightweight, and relatively inexpensive. However, it is not as breathable as natural fibers and can cause overheating.

  • Rayon: Rayon is a synthetic material that is made from wood pulp. It is often used in crib sheets because it is soft and has a silky texture. However, it is not as durable as natural fibers and can wrinkle easily.

  • Nylon: Nylon is a synthetic material that is used in some crib sheets because it is strong and durable. However, it is not as breathable as natural fibers and can cause overheating.

  • Microfiber: Microfiber is a synthetic material that is made from polyester and is often used in bedding products because it is soft and moisture-wicking. However, it is not as breathable as natural fibers and can cause overheating.

Bottom line - synthetic materials aren’t as breathable as natural fibers and may be more likely to cause overheating, which can increase the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). It is recommended to choose crib sheets made from natural fibers, such as organic cotton or bamboo, to help promote a safe and comfortable sleeping environment for infants.

Comfort:

Organic crib sheets are made from natural fibers such as cotton, which are soft, breathable, and comfortable for babies. This can help to promote better sleep and overall well-being.

Durability:

Organic crib sheets are often made using high-quality materials and may be more durable than non-organic cribsheets, reducing the need for frequent replacements.

They are durable for several reasons:

  • High-quality materials: Organic crib sheets are often made from high-quality, organic cotton fibers that have not been treated with pesticides or other chemicals. This can result in a stronger, more durable fabric that can withstand repeated washings and use.

  • Weave type: The type of weave used in organic crib sheets can also affect their durability. Percale weave, for example, is a tightly woven fabric that is known for its strength and durability.

  • Thread count: The thread count of organic crib sheets can also impact their durability. A higher thread count means that the fabric is more tightly woven, which can make it stronger and more resistant to wear and tear.

  • Production process: The production process used to make organic crib sheets can also impact their durability. For example, sheets that are pre-washed or pre-shrunk before they are sold may be less likely to shrink or become misshapen after washing.

Environmental sustainability:

Organic crib sheets are made using materials that are grown without the use of harmful pesticides and fertilizers. This helps to promote sustainability and reduce the impact of farming on the environment. Many GOTS-certified brands also collaborate with Fairtrade Canada.

Social responsibility:

Organic crib sheets are often produced using fair trade practices such as Fairtrade Canada, which promote the ethical treatment of workers and support sustainable livelihoods in developing countries.

Cost-effectiveness:

While organic crib sheets may initially appear to be more expensive than non-organic options, their durability and other benefits may make them a cost-effective choice in the long run. The cost does vary but on average, a GOTS Certified crib sheet can cost between $35-45 CAD dollars.
